An Updated Overview of Wind Tunnel Testing Capabilities for Civil Aircraft Development in the Large Industrial Wind Tunnels of ONERA

The operation and uses of the large industrial wind tunnels of ONERA continue to evolve with the changing needs of the global civil aircraft market. The testing techniques are more reliable, and data quality and confidentiality are paramount. This updated overview highlights the types of tests routinely carried out over the speed range from subsonic, through transonic, to supersonic. We also describe the latest developments in testing techniques (particularly for improved measurements and engine integration studies). Furthermore, we emphasize that through the GMT division of ONERA, we can provide a complete ground test service from model sketch to final test report, involving both model and balance design/manufacture/calibration, as well as test management and execution. The current status of wind tunnel test capabilities is presented, with indications of future developments. This overview demonstrates that ONERA's industrial wind tunnels (some of which are unique in the world) are now operated so as to best serve the globalized aerospace business of the third millennium, under the quality assurance of ISO 9001.
