This paper presents an alternative approach forproviding ATSC 3.0 Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) datadelivery for SFN and Gap-Filler operation – using In-BandBackhaul to carry STL data over the air in the 6 MHzbroadcast channel. The method uses LDM transmission tocarry STL data alongside broadcast data intended forreception by the public. The system is fully compatible withthe ATSC 3.0 Next Gen TV service, causing no degradationof consumer reception. The scheme can reducebroadcasters’ operating costs while improving servicequality – especially for mobile, handheld and indoorreception environments – by avoiding the limitations of onchannelrepeaters and permitting deployments of SFNtransmitters and gap-fillers in locations that otherwisecould not be reached economically.
