The production of aluminum, either as primary metal or by scrap recycling, is a major industry in both Canada and the USA. The paper examines the mathematical and physical modeling (particularly the former) that has contributed to the development of that industry. Emphasis is on the two technologies, the Hall-Heroult cell and ingot casting, where most modeling appears to have been done in the past decade or so.
