This paper presents the performance evaluation of the traveling wave (TW)-based differential protection function TW87 when applied on hybrid transmission lines. Functions based on TWs have shown to be a trend in protection relays, since they eliminate the need to estimate phasors, thereby they operate faster than traditional protection functions. The TW87 can be applied on hybrid lines (formed by overhead, underground and/or submarines cables), provided that some restrictions are taken into account. Therefore, to clarify these application issues, several fault cases are carried out in the Alternative Transients Program (ATP) to evaluate the TW87 performance when applied on hybrid lines. The obtained results show that the TW87 is reliable, and highlight limitations and adaptations able to generalize the TW87 for hybrid lines without restrictions.
