The extensive meta- and para-dechlorination of the PCBs in the Hudson River has reduced their potential toxicity and carcinogenicity by converting the more highly chlorinated toxic and persistent congeners to mono- and dechlorinated PCBs (Brown et al., 1987a, b; Abramowicz, 1994). The dechlorinated PCBs, in turn, can be degraded by aerobic microorganisms in the sediment. Hence PCB dechlorination is playing a significant role in the natural recovery of the Hudson River.
