The present study investigated the change of the soil sorption capacity for heavy metals due to changes in physical and chemical soil properties. Weathering, soil amendments (e. g. animal manure, mineral fertilizers) and different land use (e. g. grassland, forest) yielded to varying soil characteristics in soils of two long-term field experiments and in floodplain soils of different age presenting a chronosequence schema. Batch sorption experiments and sequential extractions were performed. It could be clearly shown that soil age and soil management has a significant impact on the soil sorption capacity for copper, cadmium and zinc.
