The combustion of renewable fuels, such as logs, wood pellets, bark waste, straw pellets is gaining more and more importance. In Europe alone tens of thousands of small heating boilers are installed every year to burn biomass with capacities between 10 kW and 1 MW. Modern systems feature high energy-conversion efficiency and meet strictest environmental standards. Meeting such requirements puts, on the other hand, high burdens on the refractory lining and combustion chambers. The expected life of refractory lining is at least seven years if maintained regularly. Despite all this, both users and boiler manufacturers often experience sudden failures after one or two heating seasons due to excessive thermal, thermo mechanical and chemical loads of the refractory material, defects of design and workmanship or use of wrong fuels.
