Corrosion behavior of two commercially available non-stoichiometric spinels, one containing 78% alumina and the second containing 90% alumina (balance being magnesia with minor impurities) have been tested against a slag from steel ladle and compared with the corrosion of fused magnesia. Two types of fused magnesia grains, both with more than 97% magnesia and a CaO/SiO_2 ratio greater than 2 have been used. One was a normal fused magnesia with average crystal size of 400 μm and other with a crystal size of ~ 800 μm. The slag was taken from a steel shop producing aluminium killed steel for flat products and contains about 55% CaO, 28% Al_2O_3, 7.6% MgO, 3.7% SiO_2 and 3.5%Fe_2O_3.
