Calcium aluminate minerals CA_2, CA may besuccessfully used in refractory applications due to their excellent alkali resistance against various salts as well as due to their infiltration resistance to aluminium metal and its alloys, and tin in a temperature range up to approximately 1400℃. CA_6 may be used even at higher temperatures but with some restrictions due to alkali resistance and the tendency to react with magnesium rich aluminium alloys to spinel formation.The alkali resistance is the main issue for the use as tin bath bottom blocks for float glass production. First installation running since 1,5 years in the hot bays of a float glass furnace have proven the advantages of a FCA 68 type product. Further application possibilities like shaft kiln linings for lime furnaces are in an experimental state.
