The thermal characteristics of motor relates to the secure operation of electric machine, which is important in the process of improving motor's efficient and working capacity. In this article, the thermal field of a special single-side permanent synchronous linear motor (SPLSM) is researched. A 3-Dimentional (3-D) flow model of the SPLFM's external surfaces is built, the average wind velocities and convection coefficients of heat transfer of different external surfaces and convection surface are obtained through interpolation and fitting. Based on the characteristics of electromagnetic and thermal field, a 3-D electromagnetic-thermal coupled model is built. Besides, a 2-D thermal network model is built to accelerate the calculation speed of the thermal field. Finally, the results of 3-D finite element model and the 2-D thermal network model are consistent, and these results are verified by the experiment.
