This paper focused on studying pile group response to seismically induced lateral spreading, with and without a mass above the ground. The experimental results for each of the two pile group models were reviewed and compared. The test results indicate that the lateral pressure which is exerted by the shallow nonliquefiable soil layer controls the bending moments and axial forces developed along the pile for both cases, with and without a mass above the ground. The bending moments were always larger in the vicinity of the upper and lower soil interfaces. The superstructural inertia influenced bending moments, especially at shallow depths, and appeared to be more critical in imposing greater tensile forces in the upslope piles of a pile group.
