Batteries used in electro mobility applications are usually decommissioned after a service life of 5 to 8 years or when their capacity has degraded to 80% of its initial value. Aged cells can be used for a second life in stationary storage applications generating economic and ecological benefits. However, it is not clear how already aged cells will further degrade under different stress condition and what residual lifetime can be expected. In the BFE founded research project Second Life economical and technical aspects are investigated by analyzing battery performance, reliability and safety behaviour in real life storage applications and by accelerated ageing of cells in laboratory endurance tests. 148 LiFeP04 cells with nominal capacities between 90Ah and 200Ah previously used in mobility applications for 3.5 to 8 years have been electrically characterized (capacity, DC-resistance, impedance) and undergo now field and laboratory stress testing.
