As part of the Urban Community Air Toxics Monitoring Project, Paterson City, NJ (UCAMPP), concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in PM_(10) were measured from November 2005 through December 2006. Three sites in Paterson City, which were dominated by industrial, commercial and mobile sources, were chosen as monitoring locations. The comparison background site was located in Chester, NJ, which is located about 36 miles west/southwest of Paterson, NJ. Sixteen priority PAHs compounds were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). PAH concentrations at Paterson sites were significantly higher than concentrations measured at the background site. Potential sources of ambient PAHs at each site were identified using the diagnostic ratios between PAHs.
