Impacts of Vehicle Re-entrained Dust on Airborne Particle Deposition to Lake Tahoe

The atmospheric deposition of fine sediment particles to Lake Tahoe can be a substantial sourceof the pollutants contributing to declining lake water clarity. Previous study of estimates ofquantities of atmospheric deposition of fine sediment particles (“FSP”, <16 um in diameter) wasquestioned as having lowest confidence due to high uncertainty and insufficient data. In thisstudy, by integrating road dust emission factors from the Tahoe TRAKER study and 5-yearmeteorological data and TRANSCAD traffic database (VMT) and GIS tools, we summarize theseasonal near field deposition of sediment near the roadways and assess relationship of triplocation and atmospheric deposition to the lake. Approximately ~20 Mg/year road emissions ofPM10 and ~35 Mg/year TSP is estimated to reach the lake. We estimate that from paved roadtravel, the atmospheric dry deposition to the lake is approximately 6% of the total LTADS drydeposition.
