Tiger striping has been defined and the mechanism for creating tiger striping has been reviewed. Two mechanisms for rubber particle behavior have been discussed and data has been presented to support both mechanisms. Based on this review the best approach for reduction in tiger striping is to incorporate high Mw rubber particles to reduce the tan d of the resin and decrease the retraction time of the rubber particles. This, high Mw, approach preserves the critical impact strength performance requirement for automotive TPOs.. This approach may also work to stabilize the flow front of the resin also improving tiger striping. Future work should include delineation of flow front stabilization and ihe particle retraction mechanism and investigation into other additives for tan d reduction and increased particle retraction.
