The present paper describes preliminary results from field trials for corrosion loss of individual mild steel coupons under marine tidal conditions, undertaken on the eastern Australian seaboard. It was found that the greatest corrosion loss occurs at mid-tide level or at a level of mean water level where wave action is significant. Minimal loss was found to occur near the mud-line. These observations are generally consistent with earlier observations reported in the literature. New results presented herein include the effect of seawater wave action and velocity, the effect of time of wetness for coupons shielded from the environment and the effect of solar radiation. These observations are described.
