The use of corrosion inhibitors has been an essential part of the exploration, production and refining of oil and gas for more than 60 years. Phosphate ester corrosion inhibitors have been successfully used for the last 40 years for treating oil and in particular, gas production. This paper focuses on some most recent developments of phosphate ester chemistries used as corrosion inhibitors for corrosion control of oil and gas production applications. A laboratory programme has been carried out to develop corrosion inhibitor chemistries capable of satisfying criteria laid down to meet the stringent requirements to treat a wide range of oil and gas production systems. Phosphate ester corrosion inhibitors have been developed that are effective against oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide induced corrosion; are environmentally friendly; combine water and hydrocarbon solubility and partitioning; are thermally stable for extended periods at temperatures above 100℃, and meet full system process compatibility requirements, critical for application to gas production systems. Supporting data is presented and discussed.
