The acoustic opening is a multichannel audio communication system which can be used as the backbone of future immersive audio applications. This paper examines several approaches to reduce the coding bit rate required for building such kind of systems. Two different schemes receive special attention: in multiple source scenarios inter-channel decorrelation techniques are employed to increase efficiency; in scarce source scenarios, like in teleconference environments where only one or two sources are expected at the same time, the Source Separation + Wave Field Synthesis scheme is reviewed, as a way of further reducing bandwidth requirements, and some solutions are proposed.
