Surfactants are being studied in the ArcelorMittal steelmaking plants as water additives.The use of water additives is a method that can be employed to modify the heattransfer characteristics of water. Surfactants are chemicals that are being studied tobe employed for this purpose in different steelmaking processes.As a side effect, the corrosivity of any new additive has to be assessed. For this reason,a study of the corrosivity of several commercial water additives was carried outin the laboratory.The results obtained show that the addition of this type of products lowers the corrosionrate of carbon steel in the investigated system. The corrosion rate can be up toseventeen times lower in water with 1 ppm of the chemical product as compared tothe same water without it.
