In the continuous casting of steels, the initial solidification behavior of slags is of extreme interest. The Double Hot Thermocouple Technique (DHTT) allows observation and quantification of solidification phenomenon in transparent slag systems. In this study the effect of MgO additions to a calcium aluminate slag on its ability to solidify were determined. MgO additions were found to increase the cooling rate for glass formation and also to eliminate the effects of humidity in the atmosphere on solidification behavior at levels above 7%. All slags observed were easily undercooled below their equilibrium liquidus temperatures and glass formation was always found at high cooling rates.
