Tangential Computed Tomography (6th generation CT system) is a new data collection method for industrial volume inspection. Volume data is collected in a single pass of the object through a vertical x-ray fan beam. The data is collected by a linear array of very high performance solid state detectors. It takes about 10 minutes to collect a complete data set for a 16" diameter x 26" tall object. The TCT system has the object size flexibility of second generation design and the scanning speed of third generation. The data from TCT system is displayed in two volumetric formats. In the first case, the raw scan data is organized in a Multi planar Reconstruction display of three orthogonal volumes, Tangents, Radiographs, and Sinograms. The Sinograms are raw data set immediately prior to CT reconstruction of a slice. The reconstructed CT images are then displayed in a traditional computed tomography volume study. Both volume displays can be manipulated for inspection. The raw scan data is especially useful for flaw detection while the traditional volume CT is useful for Metrology.
