Many times we find there is a lack of communication among researchers, engineers, technicians and equipment manufacturers. These break downs in communications damage our ability to adequately and effectively transfer needed knowledge critical to the performance of nondestructive testing. For communication to be effective there must be a sender, symbol, receiver and feedback. This communications loop provides a complete and effective means to transfer knowledge. However, how do we determine what is knowledge that will allow key players to function in their NDT role? We find that while the different groups have similar needs, there are also specific functional needs for each group. The lack of those specific functional needs normally results in a lack of effective performance for that group. Coupled with the need for effective communication to transfer knowledge, is the need to mentor individuals new to the nondestructive testing field. With our workforce becoming grayer, there is a need to introduce younger individuals into the field and to mentor them so that they can be successful in their future endeavors in nondestructive testing.
