A larger thrombus was not only associated with lower wall stress, but also with a higher growth rate. Therefore, wall weakening under the influence of thrombus, and not wall stress, may be the underlying cause of an increased AAA growth rate. Additional research is required to evaluate the relation between thrombus, AAA wall strength and AAA growth rate.
