An experimental modeling approach for groundwaterand contaminant transport in both saturated and unsaturated soilsis described. A dye injection visualization technique was used tomeasure the groundwater velocity vectors, map the path lines,and characterize the dispersion of contaminants in thegroundwater. Data collected for this study were for a steady statecondition of constant recharge and removal for a nearly isotropicand hdmogeneous soil. The soil was characterized in terms ofparticle size distribution and saturated flow permeability prior tothe groundwater simulation. During the tests, dye was injectedsuch that it formed a discrete marker in the soil. The marker wastracked over time. Path and time information were then used todetermine flow velocities and path lines. Marker deformationwas used to characterize the dispersion of passive contaminantsto provide insight into the physical phenomena. It was foundthat the dye injection visualization technique used is an importantaddition to the usual pressure head measurements commonlycollected and could lead to improved accuracy of groundwaterand contaminant flow models.
