The secondary impeller of the Cleveland Clinic FoundationIVAS blood pump is configured to maintain a good washingblood ow through the journal bearing and associated inter-nal passages of the pump. The complexity of the total owpath, the rather low blade height, and the relatively low netow, makes accurate analysis with conventional design meth-ods very difficult, however. Computational uid dynamicsanalysis techniques can provide significant input to the pumpdesign. Two- and three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokesequations were solved on Cray YMP and T3D computers us-ing a new solution algorithm. The 2D and 3D modeling in-cluded both simplied and fully detailed geometries.
