This paper demonstrates techniques to allow relations onparametric curves in a variational design system. Constraintson the curves, which are normally represented as constrainednonlinear optimization problems, are reduced to systems ofnonlinear equations (using the necessary conditions of theNLP). Additional degrees of freedom are constrained throughfairing the curve and the resulting NLP is also reduced to itsnecessary conditions. Although the solution set of thenecessary conditions contains the optimum, it contains manyother solutions as well. The COAST design consistencyalgorithm is reviewed and then extended to handle consistencywhen constraints take the form of relations between objects. Anexample is given involving distance constraints on Beziercurves.
