ASIST Addressing Missed Information Opportunities and Victims’ Information Agency in the Fight Against Sexual Human Trafficking

In the United States’ battle against sexual humanrntrafficking, the nascent integration of criminal justice andrnsocial service agency work is severely hampered by anrnarray of information problems, which are amenable tornmitigation from Information Studies scholars. Naïverninformation organization and infrastructure designrnundermine many of these integrated projects. More criticalrnhowever, is their general focus on process with littlernreference to supporting victims’ personal agency throughrntheir required mastery of information resources. Using arnsystematic analysis of current scholarly research articles onrnsexual human trafficking, this study identified 31 researchrnand application projects developed in reference to concreternsupport for government and social service agencies. Forrneach study, analysis examines the nature of the victims’rnpersonal information agency, as well as the primary actorsrnin each information situation. Disciplinary distinctionsrnregarding the human rights approach to prostitution,rnunderpin many of Information Studies’ missedrnopportunities for contributing to agency effectiveness.
