Soft-contacted electromagnetic casting (EMC) technology depends on the electromagnetic force to release the contact pressure between the metal and the mold, and the magnetohydrodynamics can influence the solidified process during the continuous casting, such as making more homogeneous structure over the entire " cross-section. In this paper, the structure and properties of AZ61 magnesium alloys made by soft-contacted EMC and die cast were analyzed by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. Results showed soft-contacted EMC ingots had fine and uniform grain structure. Therefore, the ingots made by the soft-contacted EMC have better mechanical property than die cast one. AZ61 alloy generally had features of brittle fracture, but the fracture morphologies of soft-contacted EMC specimens had more characters of gliding fracture.
