The removal of toluene was investigated by a cross-flow trick l ing biofilter in this paper. The filter was inoculated with pure Pseudomonas putida bacterial culture, selecting ceramic pellet as the packed media. The start-up process and the relationship of the removal efficiency of toluene, inlet concentration and residence time were studied. With inlet concentration range from 784 mg/m 3 to 1108 mg/m 3 ,at the residence time of 136 s and the temperature ranging from 18 ℃to 25 ℃ ,11 days were needed to start the filter and the removal efficiency of toluene up to 85 %. In the stable operation stage ,at the residence time of 90 s and the temperature ranging from 18 ℃to 25 ℃, the removal efficiency of toluene would drop with the inlet concentration ascending; With the residence time extending, the removal efficiency of toluene was ascending, when the residence time was 69 s, 94 s and 136 s respectively, the average removal rate was 60 %, 71 % and 86 %.
