The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of soda industrial waste (SIW) upon the anaerobic degradation of organic sludge. In terms of the special nature(such as alkaline , absorbing etc.) of SIW, different amount of SIW was mixed with organic sludge and packed into the airtight reactors, then anaerobic reactions took place under the controlled conditions. The reduction rate of VSS, the degradation rate of organic matter and the amount of Volatile fatty acids (VFAs), gas and methane produced by each reactor is compared with each other. At the same time, the response of each reactor under different dosage of SIW is monitored. According to the information mentioned above, the best proportion of the SIW added to the anaerobic digestion system is confirmed.The results showed that SIW can accelerate hydrolysis of sludge anaerobic digestion when SIW dose is less than 8.25g/L, organics dissolved from sludge has better biological degradation characteristics. During the examination, pH of digestion liquid maintained in the range of 7 to 8, which indicates that the alkaline in SIW may partly buffer organic acids produced by sludge digestion. When soda industrial waste addition is 3.30g/L, the gas and methane production reached maximum and anaerobic digestion rate is rapidest. The methane production is increased by 37.9% compared with that without SIW addition. The alkaline matter in SIW can accelerate anaerobic digestion of sludge.
