The straight-wing vertical axis wind turbine (SWVAWT) is expected a broader application in the wind power plant in the future, because it has some advantages to horizontal-axis wind turbines such as being unnecessary of orientation mechanisms, enabling the generators to be placed on the ground and smaller impact on aerodynamic noise. There are former investigations on performance estimation of SWVAWT based on single stream tube theory, multi-stream tube theory and numerical approach. The authors try to establish the estimation procedure based on the balance between loss power of wind and the power the wings acquire, because it is more direct and expected to give higher accuracy. The procedure is composed of theoretical approach and numerical calculation. In performance estimation, the turbine is considered to be two-stage actuator, and the change of angle and velocity is dealt with at each infinitesimal rotational angle. The downstream of the actuator is solved by numerical calculation, to be combined with theoretical consideration.
