In several papers[1-4], it has been reported that persulfate/amine system can be used as redox initiator in aqueous polymerization of vinyl monomer. Guo et al[2] investigated the effect of various amines on acrylamide (AAM) aqueous solution polymerization and the initiation mechanism of persulfate/amine systems was proposed based on the end group analysis and EPR studies. Recently, functional monomer containing amino group, so-called polymerizable amine can couple with persulfate to initiate AAM polymerization. Functional monomer such as N-(dimethylaminomethyl) methacrylamide (DMAMMA)[5], N-(dimethylaminomethyl) acrylamide[6] has been chosen as an amine component of redox initiator. It was found that the presence of polymerizable amine can promote the rate of polymerization and enchance the molecular weight of PAAM obtained. The present paper is concerned with the synthesis of polymerizable amine N-{(3-dimethylamino)-rnpropyl]acrylamide (DMAPAA) and N-[(3-dimethylamino)-propyl] methacryiamide (DMAPMA), the kinetics of AAM polymerization initiated with persulfate/ polymerizable amine systems and their initiation mechanism.
