Ureido-containing monomers N-acryloyl-N'-(4-methylphenyl)urea (ATU) and N-methacryloyl-N'-(4-methylphenyl)urea (MTU) were synthesized via the reaction between 4-tolylisocyanate with acrylamide (AAM) or methacrylamide, respectively. Exemplary saturate model compound N-acetyl-N'-(4-methylphenyl)urea (AcTU) was also synthesized.rnThe effects of ATU, MTU and AcTU on the polymerization of AAM in H_2O-CH_3CN (v/v=3:5) or H_2O-THF (v/v=1:1) mixed solvent initiated by eerie ion (CAN) were investigated. The reults showed that the three urea compounds have high promoting effects on the polymerization of AAM initiated by CAN, indicating CAN/ATU, CAN/MTU and CAN/AcTU belong to redox initiation systems.
