摘要

Effect of oxygen content on the morphology of MnS inclusion in free cutting steel is investigated. As oxygen content increases from 117 ppm to 220 ppm,the morphology of MnS inclusions evolves from Type II to Type I.Meanwhile the mean diameter of MnS inclusions becomes larger with the increase of oxygen content. The precipitation temperature of oxides (Mn,Fe)O calculated by thermo calc is higher than that of MnS inclusions. With the increase of oxygen content, iron content in (Mn,Fe)O increases which results in the decreased melting point of these oxides. It is suggested that (Mn,Fe)O with lower melting point may act as the heterogeneous nucleation sites for the precipitation of Type I MnS.
