This paper reports a software program named MetalSim that simulates microstructural evolution throughout hot strip rolling processes.In MetalSim,the microstructure of the whole volume is expressed as a collection of substructures that describe the metallurgical changes of recrystallized sub-volumes.MetalSim uses this substructure model to integrate mathematical models for elementary phenomena.Static,dynamic and post-dynamic recrystallizations are described as the volume exchanges between substructures.The microstructural evolution in a substructure is modeled using phenomenological expressions of work-hardening,dynamic recovery,static recovery and grain growth.Models for precipitation,phase transformation under controlled cooling,and mechanical properties are also incorporated.MetalSim has been applied to predict the microstructures and mechanical properties of low carbon Si-Mn steels and Nb-microalloyed steels.The predicted values show good agreement with the results of the laboratory experiments and rolling mill logs.
