We consider chains of nonlinear bistable links described by constitutive relations with two stable branchesrnseparated by a gap or an unstable region. Mechanically, this model can be realized as a structure whichrnconsists of two rods, the second being slightly longer than the first and not resisting the loading until the firstrnrod breaks. We call this construction the waiting element structure. The chain of such nonlinear links showsrnbetter stability under extension than the corresponding non-structured material and it absorbs much largerrnenergy before breakage. We optimize parameters of the structure to improve its resistance to a slow loading.rnPossible applications include protective structures design and modeling fracture in a porous material or arnframe construction.
