Innovative facades transform buildings into landmarks regardless of location and are essential to the building's architectural design and performance. Facade performance relies on an in-depth understanding of materials, the environment, and construction. This understanding (along with the ability to integrate the facade's air, water, vapor, and thermal barriers with other enclosure elements and building systems) leads to efficient and sustainable projects. Lasting building performance not only relies on continuity of these barriers but also on an integrated approach to the design, analysis, fabrication, and construction of building enclosures. The design of facade details depends on a range of both technical and aesthetic factors, including the cladding types, glazing assembly profiles, structural attachment, fabrication methods, and installation sequencing. This requires that designers integrate the performance of the various facade components as well as the process from design conception to final construction. This paper will explain how field performance is achieved by designing for construction through the review of several case studies that focus on developing details for various facade conditions. The case studies will cover: (1) types of facade components that lead to difficult integrations; (2) proactive detailing and coordination methods that lead to better-performing and constructible facades; (3) technology, such as analysis and three-dimensional modeling, that assists with coordination, validating performance through analysis, and integrating design with fabrication and construction; (4) applying advanced enclosures techniques to all projects, regardless of size, complexity, or cost.
