Solar louvers and light shelves serve as passive cooling, shading, and lighting mechanisms. The goal of this research was to optimize a passive system for this particular location and building shape/orientation by observing how the temperature and lighting change with different outdoor building attachments is the goal of this project. As part of this pilot study this research provides some of the methodology being used. The first method examines a physical scale model using the Sun Path Method. A second comparative method was used to compare the results further quantifying the results of the first method through computer simulation software known as Ecotect. Based on the methodologies used the simulations yielded a reduction in solar thermal gain of 10-15% during the summer months when solar shading devices were used yet had little to no impact on the daylighting effect.
