Nail plates are used extensively in the manufacture of wood trusses. Another possible use is as shear connectors for built-up sections. Published capacities of nail plates are limited to loadings that place the nail plate in tension. To determine the flexural capacity and stiffness of a built-up section, the capacity and stiffness of nail plates placed in shear have to be known. A series of direct shear tests and flexural tests were conducted to determine the behavior of shear plates in shear and the flexural behavior of a built-up wood stud.
