Preliminary data from the Southampton Underwater Multiparameter Optical Spectrometer System (SUMOSS)

Spectral up- and downwelling irradiance and beam attenuation have been measured to 5nm resolution in the western Mediterranean, Bay of Gdansk and Southampton Water, using a fibre-optics based spectrometer. Preliminary data are presented, and the observed optical variability is discussed, with particular reference to the usefulness of spectral features for identifying and quantifying optically active parameters in Case Ⅱ waters.
