A time-domain mathematical model combining electric and current fields is introduced to calculate the transient electric field of 500 kV disc-type spacers according to lighting impulse voltage characteristics. The response caused by a lighting impulse voltage is expressed by the Dehamel integration. Potential distribution curves at typical time and electric field intensity curves along with time are shown. The tangential field intensity E_t and normal field intensity E_n curves with time along the radial direction on interfaces of spacers are illustrated. Some effects caused by relaxation times are given in this paper, too. All results can be used as references for GIS insulation designs.
