A methodology to design a Trapped Vehicle Detection (TVD) system for four quadrant gate crossings is demonstrated. The determination of the location of check points in the track system to communicate the status of the crossing to a train and provide evasive maneuver time for the train and trapped vehicle is discussed. The findings indicate that there is a trade-off between minimizing the distances to locate the TVD warning devices in the track system and issues of reliability of vehicle detection and maximization of safety. Recommendations include provison of onboard real-time status information on the crossing (s) in the train with automatic train location and control to continuously provide safe stopping distances in event of a trapped vehicle.
