Modification of a typical linerboard furnish with a crude cellulase/hemicellulase enzyme mixture was found to worsen formation slightly. Individual enzymes, such as endoglucanase and xylanase, did not have any noticeable effect. The strength properties of linerboard treated with the crude cellulase/hemicellulase mixture were then examined more closely using two sheet forming methods. Both dynamically formed sheets and handsheets showed similar trends for improvements in compression strength and losses in intrinsic fibre strength after treatment with a high cellulase dose, in agreement with previous studies. In contrast, dynamically formed sheets showed increases hi apparent density and tensile indices with the cellulase treatment, while handsheets did not. Although an explanation for these contrasting trends could be rationalised, there did not appear to be a simple reconciliation of the strength results with the formation results, or with previous results on flocculation tendencies.
