Online condition and runnability monitoring systems have become important tools for monitoring normal and abnormal vibration patterns and predicting unexpected failures in paper machinery. These online systems monitor pulp and paper making lines, their mechanical components and process components 24 hours per day. The systems provide short term analysis and long term historical trends of vibrations and generate alarms which help the operators and maintenance staff to monitor the machine condition and process operations and to see abnormal and potentially dangerous signs of premature failure. This technical paper highlights the experiences with online systems that have been used in pulp and paper mills to detect pre-failure conditions. By detecting the early warning signs of failure, catastrophic and dangerous failures have been avoided. The analysis techniques used to detect and isolate the problems are presented.
