OSHA and NIOSH have established a threshold limit of 5 mg/m3 of aerosol particles in metalworking workplaces to minimize respiratory problems. In this paper, a novel approach is presented to not only reach, but to surpass this goal.A totally new filtration concept based on dynamic principles is presented. Although prototypes using this technology are being developed for many applications, this paper focuses only on oil mist elimination in metalworking operations. The self-cleaning prototype had constant flow and pressure differential, operating in the 200 - 500 CFM range with post-filtration concentrations ≤ 5 mg/m~3, which translated to a particle removal size range ≥ 2.5 microns. However, recent modifications have improved the output mist concentration to ≤ 1 mg/m~3 for input concentrations of 50 - 60 mg/m~3, resulting in 99+% particle removal efficiencies. Present output concentrations are 20% of the current threshold limit specified by OSHA and NIOSH.
