PILOT PLANT FILTER TESTING OF BACKWASHING TUBULAR FILTERS

Tubular backwash filters are extensively used in many industries in solid/liquid separation as replacements for disposable bag, cartridge, sock or roll-goods filters. They offer the distinct advantages of reliable, predictable performance, enclosed operation, simple operation, and are suited for precoat. This paper describes two types of backwash filters, how they are piloted, and how scaleup is performed. Guidelines for pilot filter size selection and a typical test protocol are provided. Actual case histories are presented to show how information gained in pilot testing is used in the selection and design of plant-scale tubular backwash filters.
