EFFECT OF THE GROUP COMPOSITION OF LOW RANK COAL ON COMBUSTION REACTIVITY

Combustion for electric power generation is the most important commercial utilization of coal, and willremain in the next several decades. However, the behavior of coal combustion is complicated becausecoal is not a homogeneous chemical compound, instead is a composition of a wide variety ofhydrocarbon compounds and heteroatom-containing compounds with lots of chemical structureslargely unknown, esp. for low rank coal. Small molecules that are widely known as parts of the coalstructure have strong influence on the combustion reactivity of coal. Nevertheless, the fundamentalunderstanding of the influences and the correlation between the small molecules and the coalcombustion behaviors is insufficient to support the development of coal combustion technologies. Inthis paper, the low rank coal is subject to extract with several solvents, so that the extracts and residueswith different composition are obtained. The extracts are analyzed by GC/MS, and the combustionbehavior of residual are tested by thermogravimetric (TG) analyzer. The effect of the extracted groupcomposition on the ignition index, combustion reactivity and burnout index of the coal are disclosedaccordingly.
