OSHPD Enforces Code Compliance - Are we going in the RIGHT direction? 2007 CBC and ASCE 41-06 Santa Clara Valley Medical Center SB1953 Compliance Partial Demolition and Retrofit of Old Main Hospital

California Hospitals are required to comply with California Senate Bill 1953 and bring hospital buildings into compliance with mandated seismic performance standards. In 1999, Creegan + D'Angelo Engineers [C+D] provided the SB1953 seismic performance evaluation report for the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center [SCVMC], the "public hospital" in San Jose. The seven-story, 220,000 square foot, reinforced concrete Main Hospital building designed in 1956 received an SPC 1 rating. Old Main includes an expansion joint that creates two separate structures, Old Main East [OME] and Old Main West [OMW]. An adjacent, three-story Services Link corridor provides circulation into Old Main from adjacent buildings. The medical center had completed multiple building expansions and has added new buildings on the campus since the Old Main Hospital was constructed. Over the past eleven years, the medical center has been engaged in master planning to chart the next 30 years of the hospital, as well as in evaluating and upgrading various buildings to comply with SB 1953.
