Steam requirement is playing a major role in the manufacturing of sugar. After introduction of co-generation, conservation of energy in sugar plant is an essential requirement for improving the export of power. Most of the progressive sugar factories are concentrating on conservation of steam and power. The new sugar plants are operating at 40% plus steam consumption for process while the old sugar plants are still at 50% on cane. There is tremendous potential to reduce the steam consumption further by installing energy efficient equipments in the boiling house. Any further saving in process steam consumption will either improve the crushing capacity of the sugar plant or the surplus power export to the grid. Highlights of the initiatives taken by M/s GMR Industries Limited (Sugar Division) to bring down the process steam consumption to 34.60 % on cane by introduction of various waste heat recovery systems are given below.
