Optical fiber has long since emerged as the medium of choice for the implementation of local and long haul transmission systems. The appeal of optical fiber for such applications stems in large part from its low loss-low dispersion properties, allowing for the efficient transmission of highspeed digital information streams with long inter-repeater spacing. More recently, the development of practical optical amplifiers has served to further strengthen the utility of fiber-band transmission systems.
